In Hawaii, the term “Aloha” carries a deeper meaning than just an alternative greeting. True Aloha spirit is a guideline of how to live one’s life, with unconditional love, peace, and compassion for everyone around you. This project embodies this ideal by aiming to improve the living conditions for those in the Caleta De Campos region in a locally sustainable manner.

The state of Michoacán contains some of the poorest, most illiterate, least developed areas within Mexico. The Cliffside town of Caleta De Campos, with it’s surrounding fishing and farming communities, exemplify impoverished coastal Mainland Mexico. The people that live in these communities are isolated from much of the aid that is provided by the government and charity sources due to its proximity to the cartel-related violence between the police, army, townspeople, and numerous other parties. Advanced medical care can only be found in the large cities. Lazaro Cardenas provides the nearest hospitals to Caleta de Campos but is roughly 1.5 hour drive.

One of the leading causes of death in Mexico and around the world is Heart disease. Heart attacks occur when blood is impeded from flowing freely through the heart, usually due to a clot or thrombus. Often coupled with Myocardial infarction, Sudden Cardiac Arrest is a malfunction in the electrical signaling the heart uses to rhythmically contract and relax. While both Heart Attacks and Sudden Cardiac Arrest are serious life-threatening conditions, effective CPR coupled with proper use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can treat, and even reverse Sudden Cardiac Arrest.

As Red Cross Certified CPR instructors, we have aligned with a local bed and breakfast to teach a free CPR and first aid classes to the staff and Caleta community. With the “Aloha AED Project – Michoacan” we hope to raise $1500.00 to cover costs of a Defibtech “View” recertified AED and the necessary supplemental equipment to teach CPR in Caleta De Campos. The 1500.00 USD I am asking for will cover the cost of the recertified AED package, 1 set of replacement AED adult pads, 1 set of pediatric pads, and a spare replacement battery. Please help us by donating and spreading awareness so we can provide life saving techniques to those in need.
