Soul Spot Sunscreen

For years, humans have used different kinds of methods to protect their skin from the sun, and with advancements in technology and research, the protective quality of sunscreen has improved immensely. However, after further canadian pharmacy research in uk, it turns out that most mainstream sunscreens contain chemicals that are harmful to the environment and to our skin. The active ingredient for most sunscreen brands is oxybenzone, a common UV-filtering compound that bleaches coral reefs and contaminates the ocean. According to studies conducted by UCF, oxybenzone not only kills the coral, but it causes DNA damage in adults and deforms the DNA in coral in the larval stage, stunting their development. The chemical is so potent that it can affect coral reefs with just a drop and with over 600 sunscreen brands containing this ingredient, the scale of this environmental disaster is beyond imagination.

If you think that is bad enough, studies have shown that oxybenzone is also harmful to your health. According to a study by the CDC, oxybenzone acts as a penetration enhancer, allowing other chemicals to easily seep into your skin, causing skin irritation and sun related allergies. To include, the chemical acts as a hormone disrupter, altering the reproductive hormones. According to the CDC, a human study co applying 3 sunscreen active ingredients (oxybenzone, 4-MBC, and octinoxate) suggested a significant drop in testosterone levels in men during a one-week application period.

So what do we do when millions of people are harming their skin and the ocean with every application of sunscreen? What do we do when, according to the EWG, the FDA has yet to review the safety of oxybenzone since their last study in 1978? The first step is to spread awareness of this harmful chemical in sunscreen and the second step is to switch to all natural sunscreen.

Luckily, there is a new sunscreen emerging in the market that is dedicated to the conservation of our oceans and the integrity of our health. Started up by three SDSU students who have come together with a vision for a positive change, Soul Spot Sunscreen, LLC produces all natural sunscreen with ingredients that you can read and provides optimal protection for your skin without jeopardizing the status of our oceans and health. This sunscreen company goes back to sunscreen basics, hand making each individual unit with only four ingredients: coconut oil, beeswax, non-nano zinc oxide, and glycerin. And with its thick consistency, the sunscreen would appeal to surfers as the protective paste does not rub off, even against the biggest of waves.

With more and more studies linking oxybenzone to health defects and reefs taking a hit, the time for a completely natural, reef-safe sunscreen has never been more urgent. Soul Spot Sunscreen, LLC will be available for purchase at its launch date, April 10th, so save the date!
