The Center for Surf Research played a significant role in helping design the surfing theme of the $53 million refurbishment of Zura Hall, a freshman residential hall that now looks and feels like a seaside resort. Zura now has surfboard lockers and washdown areas outside of the hall, a huge mural by local surf artist Andy Davis and more than 50 sustainable surfboards as art/lighting pieces through the building. The Center and star alumnus Carl Kish were instrumental in securing the sustainable surfboards from Hess Surfboards, Wegner Surfboards, Hemp Surfboards, Reeco Surfboards, and Firewire Surfboards.

In addition the Center for Surf Research is running a freshman seminar titled Adventures in Surfing and Sustainability for some of the residents of the hall. As well as learning about sustainability through the lens of surfing, these students will get to experience a day of surfing with the Mission Bay Aquatic Center, building a surfboard with SDSU alumni business Shaper’s Studio, and a visit to the California Surf Museum.
